The reality is that there was a veil that covered our eyes and caused spiritual blindness, ever since we came into this world – we were born with it. It’s not a physical veil, it can’t be diagnosed by the doctors and so can’t be medicated or removed surgically. Its spiritual in nature and it gave us the sinful nature. It was inherited from our forebears- Adam and Eve.
It is this spiritual blindness, this sinful nature that makes people live a life of sin and revel in it. Imagine a husband who becomes abusive and sleeps around and then brags about it! It’s obvious he must be blinded to the light.
Becoming a disciple requires the veil to be removed and this is the work of the Spirit, which leads to the conversion that we call the born-again experience (John 3).
What is this work of the Spirit? The Spirit of God leads a man to the cross. On the cross, there is the shedding of water and blood at the side of Jesus. This ultimate sacrifice is the payment of our sins. Heb. 9:22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood, and without shedding of blood is no remission. KJV
At the cross, the Spirit gives you the option to accept the sacrifice of Jesus as the payment for your sin. It is this acceptance that brings about the born-again conversion.
Following this conversion, Paul then tells us to imitate God. Eph. 5:1-2 Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. 2 Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us[a] and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.
Therefore, you become a disciple of Jesus not by simply attending church, or getting information or simply by making a few moral changes here and there, but through transformation – a radical shift of the spirit and mind.
This radical change in the spirit is what we refer to as the “born again” experience. The radical shift in the mind is about understanding who you are, to whom you belong and how you are to behave thereafter – hence the imitation of Christ. This comes through the study and the application of the word of God and other spiritual disciplines.

The word disciple as used in the biblical ancient Far East has a different connotation or meaning to the way it is generally understood here in the West. A disciple is not a student who is ready to learn, but more of a follower who imitates both the life and the teaching of his/her master. Discipleship is a deliberate
Billy Graham once said, “Salvation is free, but discipleship costs everything we have”. Disciples must be committed to Jesus as Lord. When General William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, was asked the secret of his amazing Christian life, he answered, ‘I told the Lord that He could have all that there is of William Booth”. In order to become disciples of Jesus Christ we must: “Deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him”.
